Contaminated sediment poses difficult assessment and remediation challenges but recent improvements in methodologies offer much promise. New assessment methods and improved remediation technologies that directly address contaminant mobility and bioavailability have enhanced our ability to effectively manage sediments.   Contaminated sediments may pose risks to both human and environmental health. Such sediments may be found inlarge sites, such as the harbors of industrialized ports. However, they are also frequently found in smaller sites, such as streams, lakes, bayous, and rivers. In response to the risk that contaminated sediments pose, new methods for the remediation of contaminated sediment .

Comprehensive technical guidance on in-situ capping of contaminated sediment can be found in the EPA’s Assessment and Remediation of Contaminated Sediment (ARCS) Program Guidance for In-Situ Subaqueous Capping of Contaminated Sediments (U.S. EPA d) and the Assessment and RemediationFile Size: KB. Processes and Design Principles for In Situ Remediation Series: SERDP ESTCP Environmental Remediation Technology, Vol. 4 Kitanidis, Peter K., McCarty, Perry L. (Eds.) A comprehensive resource on contaminated sediments, this book opens with discussions of the contamination of sediments resulting from discharge of pollutants, excessive nutrients, and other hazardous substances from anthropogenic activities. It examines impacts observed as a result of these discharges, including the presence of hazardous materials and the phenomenon of.

About this book The purpose of this book is to help engineers and scientists better understand contaminated sediment sites and identify and design remedial approaches that are more efficient and effective. Contaminated sediment management is a difficult and costly exercise that is rarely addressed with easily identified and implemented remedies.

Assessment and Remediation of Contaminated Sediments (Nato Science Series: IV:) th Edition by Danny Reible (Editor), Tomas Lanczos (Editor)Author: Danny Reible. From the Back Cover The purpose of this volume, Processes, Assessment and Remediation of Contaminated Sediment, is to help engineers and scientists better understand contaminated sediment sites and identify and design remedial approaches that are more efficient and cturer: Springer.

Physical, chemical and biological approaches for the assessment and remediation of sediments are all addressed. Developing regulatory and strategic approaches are highlighted with a special emphasis on the potential for biological remediation for the management of contaminated sediments.

The pervasive, widespread problem of contaminated marine sediments is an environmental issue of national importance, arising from decades of intentionally and unintentionally using coastal waters for waste disposal.

This book examines the extent and significance of the problem. from book Assessment and Remediation of Contaminated Sediments: Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Assessment and Remediation of Contaminated Sediments Bratislava, Slovak.

Remediation options include no action (monitored natural attenuation), removal, treatment, and containment.
